Ralph Smith, iconclastic
CEO of high tech software firm PStream, blasted the
BC campus with his discussion of his latest book "Think
Inside the Box - why creativity at your workplace
is unwanted ".

Mr. Smith, a major Bruce's College contributor, did
not hold back during his 45-minute lecture, readily
demonstrating his" who-gives-a-damn, I'm a millionaire
so go screw yourself" style. Section One of his
speech dealt with Ralph's own 80/20 rule - 80% of the
people at your workplace are morons. Mr. Smith offered
data to show that this group was barely capable of doing
their jobs, let alone extending themselves. According
to Mr. Smith, asking one of the 80%to be creative is
"like putting these idiots in a round room and
asking them to sit in the corner". The filled auditorium
was audibly disgusted, but after a few boos, Mr. Smith
let it be known that if anyone wanted to see next year's
gymnasium upgrade project get funded, they better "Shut
the h*ll up!"
In a subdued auditorium, Mr. Smith continued into Section
2. For the remaining 20% of the population at your work,
Smith made a case that these folks couldn't be trusted.
Smith believed the "smart" people were focused
mostly on plots to steal your knowledge and\or clients,
though he seemed to be able to only offer anecdotal
data. Paying the smart to be creative on your time would
only encourage their mutinous behavior, so might as
well forget it. At this point of the lecture, Smith's
rumored depressive-paranoia seemed in evidence.
However, Smith wrapped up his speech on a positive
note, indicating that dispite all these human frailities,
his company "PStream" was more than capable
of serving the business world's needs. He recommended
that the "dunderheads" as well as the intellegent
could benefit by purchasing a copy of his book, though
he seemed to suggest the former best use the tome as
a doorstop. A smattering of applause at the end of the
lecture was significantly boosted when Mr. Smith opened
his wallet and flashed some large bills.
While we may not agree with almost anything Mr. Smith
writes or says, we still applaud this important Bruce's
College financial supporter, and sincerly hope this
was enough to see many of the planned facilities improvements
on the BC campus come to bear.
